Election fraud has been a hot topic in the weeks leading up to the election. The Hillary Clinton campaign has blasted Russia for trying to hack US elections to distract and misdirect public attention away from the contents of the Wikileaks email dumps, while Trump declares that a defeat for his campaign would signify that the election had been completely rigged against him.
Notorious hacker(s) Guccifer 2.0 reemerged after a 2 week silence on Election Day, posting on his blog, that he allegedly has information from inside the Federal Election Commission (FEC) that “Democrats may rig the elections” and that “This may be possible because of the software installed in the FEC networks by the large IT companies.” He elaborates on this prediction:
“INFO FROM INSIDE THE FEC: THE DEMOCRATS MAY RIG THE ELECTIONS
“I’d like to warn you that the Democrats may rig the elections on November 8. This may be possible because of the software installed in the FEC networks by the large IT companies.
“As I’ve already said, their software is of poor quality, with many holes and vulnerabilities.
“I have registered in the FEC electronic system as an independent election observer; so I will monitor that the elections are held honestly.
“I also call on other hackers to join me, monitor the elections from inside and inform the U.S. society about the facts of electoral fraud.”
It is possible that the “software installed in the FEC networks by the large IT companies” could refer to the GEMS vote counting software, which counts approximately 25% of all votes in the United States (map indicating where it is used under which name shown right) and in addition to “GEMS” can be found operating under five other trade names: Global Election Systems, Diebold Election Systems, Premier Election Systems, Dominion Voting Systems, and Election Systems & Software (ES&S). At the time of this writing, this system is used statewide in Alaska, Connecticut, Georgia, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Utah and Vermont, and for counties in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. It is also used in Canada.
A recent documentary short film, ‘Fraction Magic’ (watch below), was released as a video companion to the extensive, in-depth multipart (currently up to part 6) series sharing its name (open report in new window: part 1, part2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6), that meticulously explores, analyzes, and deconstructs the hidden fractional vote feature built into GEMS by Bennie Smith, a software engineer who wrote the ‘Fraction Magic’ program and reverse engineered the GEMS software, and Bev Harris, an election fraud expert, author, and activist who founded the non-partisan election watchdog group BlackBoxVoting.org.
It is more and more apparent each day that to move forward Americans must go through the grueling effort of fixing its irreversibly broken electoral system from the very foundation up, starting with abolishing the electoral college once and for all. The overturn of Citizens United would be crucial to kicking money’s corrupting influence out of politics, which is leaving no room for actual democracy. Until that is achieved, we should support nonpartisan citizen efforts like Lee Camp‘s Clean Money Candidates certification, which awards and promotes candidates who have refused to accept large corporate and super PAC campaign donations, choosing to remain beholden and answerable only to the people they are seeking public office to serve by being majorly funded by small individual contributions instead, while simultaneously shaming and exposing to ridicule corporate sellout candidates who are disgustingly dependent on large, blood-soaked donations from morally reprehensible war profiteers and other corporate crooks whose very trade is in death and human misery.
We should also incorporate a federal ban to be instituted statewide on gerrymandering practices or any partisan influence on voter distribution among districts. In fact, a software engineer from Massachusetts, Brian Olson, seeking to take redistricting out of the sphere of human influence altogether, wrote an algorithm in his spare time that calculates and determines “optimally compact” equal-population congressional districts in each state, based on 2010 census data. It draws districts that respect the boundaries of census blocks, which are the smallest geographic units used by the Census Bureau. This looks like an optimistic solution worth exploring, with 2020 just around the corner, and 2010 already lost to Karl Rove‘s national GOP strategy of pouring millions of dollars into what seemed to be insignificant regional 2010 elections, purposing their new legislative wins to exert influence over the redrawing of voter districts, allowing Republican state legislators all over the country to select their own voters and all but guarantee their re-election years in advance regardless of voter input. This has led to the rise of right wing extremism and plain echo chamber lunacy, in which complacent career politicians don’t see any obligation to voters to reach across the aisle for bipartisan solutions, hemorrhaging taxpayer dollars into waste when they are forced to contribute to such unproductive gridlock.
The elections themselves need to be made more open, transparent, and fair. National elections should start and close at the same time from one end of the country to the other, minimizing the chances of early vote tallies from the east coast influencing how the west coast will vote. The Secretary of State, who controls the elections in each state, should not be a partisan position; elections should not fall under the direct control of a single political party in each state. Election day should be a federal holiday during which citizens are able to use the free time to really analyze and critically think about their ballot decisions before submitting to the polls. Registration should be automatic through the DMV, or same day registration made available to all eligible voters. Felons, regardless of whether or not they are incarcerated at the time, should have voting rights fully restored, allowing those who have completed their penitentiary sentences the chance to rejoin society as equal and productive members, rather than prolonging their disenfranchisement and denying them the ability to have a say in their own destiny.
There should be no opportunity in which a single person would be allowed significant time alone with either the ballots, receipt totals, or voting machines, whose movement should always be available for public observation – maybe even a live surveillance cam stream anyone can check. Public or non-profit independent nonpartisan organizations should be brought in to conduct exit polls at all polling locations, and their raw data, belonging to the public, should be made publicly available as well. International watchdog organizations and UN election monitors should be allowed at least the same access as the public to observe and freely move around. Significant evidence of vote tampering, voter suppression, conspiracy, and election rigging that would have resulted in a changed outcome should render that entire contest as illegitimate and void. Criminal charges and court proceedings should be pursued against the alleged offenders, and a brand new election should be scheduled for as soon as time and resources may allow.
These are only some rudimentary initial suggestions on how to improve our elections at a preliminary level. Hopefully this may lead to greater public dialogue and more inspired discussion on the matter, eventually bringing about additional and further improved solutions, moving us closer to being a more accountable, free, and just society.
